Maddie Farmer, The Great Recycler

Maddie Farmer, junior, is a girl who likes to recycle … a lot. While at most houses the trash can is the more frequently used bin, in the Farmer household it is quite the opposite.

“At my house we have more recycling than trash,” Farmer said. “We also compost, where fruits and vegetables become dirt.”

Recycling was always something important to Farmer, as it’s directly related to her love of the environment.

“I’ve always liked the environment; I think it’s important to recycle,” Farmer said. “It makes me happy.”

This call to recycle is a cause she feels other people should take up as well.

“I think it would be really good if other people recycled more.” Farmer said. “I think the best way to influence people is to lead by example.”

Though she sets quite the example, recycling isn’t all that hard. All it takes is for the recyclables to reach the right bin. However, you can do more.

“I reuse scratch paper from home for math and reuse plastic bags and containers,” Farmer said. “If I see someone throw out a bottle, I pick it out and take it home.”

Recycling mostly involves small actions every day that build up, but every once in a while she does have a crowning accomplishment.

“I organized a community picnic for the homeowners association once, a ‘green picnic,’” Farmer said. “It used biodegradable utensils, and we also did a big recycling drive and made a compost pit, so there was very little waste.”

Even after all that she does and continues to do, Farmer only considers herself to be a little bit above the average recycler, and what she does we all can do.

“It’s not very hard [to recycle],” Farmer said, “I recycle as much as I can and it’d be nice if others did as much.”
