There are 14 players on the girl’s varsity basketball team, and one stands out for being very different: Karlie Cronin. Cronin is the only freshman on the team, keeping the streak alive of having at least one freshman on the team since the 2006 season. She averages 3.3 points per game, playing in 13 games so far this season, and had a season high of six points against Stone Ridge on Dec. 29. Cronin has played her part in the team’s 16-0 start to the season, which has six games left in the season before Districts begin.
Not only is Cronin a part of the varsity team, which is already an impressive feat, but she also gets significant playing time and works her way into the stat books by scoring in every game she has played in.
“I don’t mind being the only freshman here, because I get treated the same as everyone else, and we all work hard together to keep the team going strong,” Cronin said.
With seven seniors on the team departing at the end of the season, underclassmen like Cronin shape the future for varsity basketball by starting their varsity career earlier than most.
“We just like to take things one game at a time,” Cronin said, “for now, we are just focused on playing well this year.”
As she continues her success as only a freshman, the team will greatly benefit from her hard work and scoring abilities. After her freshman season comes to its conclusion, Cronin doing all she can to push the team in a positive direction for years to come.
“I just hope to have a strong four years here, and to do all I can to help the team succeed.”
