Chorus celebrates the holidays on a high note

Last December, the Oakton music department hosted their second winter concert, which is open to children and their families in the Oakton area in celebration of the winter holidays.

Since 2008, it has been a tradition for the chorus, orchestra and band department to collaborate on a holiday performance. This year, however, the music department will replace Ice and Lights with separate performances.

The chorus concert, which took place Dec. 14, differed from the other concerts throughout the year.

“We just practiced during class [instead of having after school rehearsals],” said junior Nikki Do. “For Ice and Lights, people are in costume and it’s more festive and fun.”

However, there are advantages to having separate concerts.

“I thought it was better because there was more time to focus on separate groups, each with different needs,” Do said. “One large chorus would be too large and chaotic to handle.”

When asked if she is looking forward to the chorus concert, she laughs.

“Yes!” Do said. “My favorite pieces are ‘Walking in a Winter Wonderland,’ ‘Personent Hodie,’ and ‘Schlopf Main Kind.’ The last two are very deep and emotional, but in a different language, so I’m not really sure what it is about. But I’m more excited for the Cougar Cabaret in January because the songs are more modern.”
