Students go to the Baltimore Aquarium

Oceanography and AP Environmental Science classes attended a field trip to the Baltimore Aquarium on Nov. 8 to experience real-life interactions with aquatic animals.
The purpose of this field trip was to allow students to relate what they learned in class to actual exhibits in the museum.
“[My classes] get a lot of practical labs in Oceanography, but it’s hard to get hands-on labs, because we don’t live by an ocean,” said Ryan Faubert, AP Environmental and Oceanography teacher.
Students viewed different animal exhibits and saw animals varying from sea turtles to jellyfishes.
“Jellyfishes in general can be really boring [to look at],” said Kit Mahoney, senior, “but the way it was set up was really cool. There were lights that the jellyfish would capture and reflect.”
The four-dimensional immersion theater was available for students. In the theater, students watched Planet Earth.Students also had the opportunity to watch the dolphin show.
“I was expecting [the dolphin show] to be better because I was expecting more athletic tricks,” said Erin Holden, senior.
Students could explore coral reefs, experience a tropical rain forest environment and see life in the Chesapeake Bay Explorations.
“[The field trip] was a great chance to see all exhibits. Students were able to experience Marine Biology,” Faubert said. “What we learned in class, the students saw in real life.”
