Oakton’s young political activists stepped off the Metro at Union Station to spend a day exploring political processes firsthand in the nation’s capital. The visiting students were members of the Oakton Young Democrats and Young Republicans Club (Chris Choi, Joesph Choi, Mateo Diachock, Andy Gross, Zak Goldberger, Kirin Gupta, Ankit Jain, Stephen Jordan, Holly Kelly, Tony Lee, Carson Loftus, Adrienne Lopez, Mackenzie Lynn, Kevin McGartland, Noah Merlin, Stephen Michaelis, Chris Papas, Madison Ray, Aaron Roschild, Sarah Signore, and Emma Weil). The main event of the field trip was a visit to South Carolina senator Jim DeMint, a famously conservative Tea Party advocate. DeMint, who has been prominent in the news with the approach of the 2010 mid-term elections, was a political figure of interest to the students, who in addition to being active in the political process, are almost all enrolled in AP US Government with teachers and Young Politicos leaders Joshua Henry and Rebecca Small. The students discussed several hot-button issues with Senator DeMint and his staff at their morning appointment, and toured the Supreme Court buildings in the afternoon. With “exit poll opinions” ranging from “I want him to be president” to “I’m a little frightened,” the field trip successfully brought the involved students directly into
the political process.
